I don’t know about you, but I tend to rotate my outfit aesthetics throughout the year. There are too many good ones, I can’t choose just one for the entire year!! So, I gather pieces that can be used as bases for most aesthetics (white collared shirts are the MVP of the outfit designing world no matter what the aesthetic is), and layer and accessorize according to my mood. Here are my top five aesthetics to dress up in this winter!
1. Astro-Academia
This is my #1 player this year. Inhabiting the classic academia feel with a cooler color scheme and magical twist, astro-academia is meant to imitate the astronomy scholar aesthetic. Star charts and dark blue suspenders, drawing constellations in the margins of your notebooks, midnight picnics with friends, and an obsession with all lights in the dark are some of the ideals of this aesthetic. As a blue apologist, I’m not afraid to admit that this is basically a blue version of dark academia with a twist and I’m not sorry for it.
2. Dark Academia
Yeah, okay, let’s get the obvious one out of the way. Imagine Hogwarts in the winter time: big scarfs and long coats. Sweaters and sweater vests galore will be keeping you warm and stylish this season, and reading in a window seat is always a classic past-time in these outfits.
3. Grunge
Honestly, this could be most black-centered aesthetics (emo, punk, etc.), but grunge is my personal favorite so we’re focusing on that one. Imagine Scott Pilgrim early 2000s rock band aesthetic. Baggy pants, chains, layered jewelry, all the skeleton themed pieces you can get your hands on, the works. Did I mention baggy pants? Don’t forget the DIY personalization of every item in your closet, because you need to embroider little stars onto every piece of fabric in there.
4. Goblin Core
Mushrooms, frogs, and earthy colors make up the basis of this cottagecore-like aesthetic. The ultimate goal is to feel like you just stepped out of the log you carved for a home. To me, it feels kind of like a whimsy cottagecore-fairycore mix. High waisted dress pants and shorts in cool browns and greens, plant and mushroom paraphernalia, large sweaters, and overalls are staples of this aesthetic.
5. Kawaii
Okay, I’ll be the first to admit that I don’t necessarily dress like this…ever. Not that I don’t want to, I love the clothes from this aesthetic, but I look so awkward in them. nevertheless, I have been taking inspiration from it for my winter decor in my room so I thought I’d add it to the list. This aesthetic is built from Asian (especially Japanese and Korean) culture, pastels, Sanrio characters, and pop culture references galore.
